Duolingo not working? Try Noi!
I hate learning a new language. Despite me speaking two languages, I have never found myself motivated to learn a third. I thought this was something I could avoid for the rest of my waking life. Maybe in the afterlife I’ll learn something new. But as I start to explore my world, my worst enemy from highschool has arrived once more, learning a new language.
It just doesn’t stick. Duolingo just doesn’t stick. The repetition. THe word games. They never work. But what does? Speaking it. Did my Duolingo Japanese help me at all when I first arrived in Japan? No. Did just learning phrases and trying my best to speak to ANYONE that would spare the time. Yes!
With Noi, my friend Ben and I wanted to make an app to do just that. Speak! With AI translation, transcription, and feedback, we could do just that!
(Love showing off how you can click quoted statements by the AI that bring you the point of the video it is referencing)
I also added a feature to talk to a live voice agent to practice real conversations.
My first experience using gRPC. A really cool alternative to a websocket and found it great to use.
